Traditions:

The British are often viewed as the most Bering people in the word. They wear unimaginative formal clothes, eat tasteless food, practise slow sports and have a peculiar sense of humor which is usually not understood by foreigners. They are also said to be conservative, reserched and cool. Indeed, the British are not very open or spontaneous. They do not kiss or embace by way of greeting so as not to allow familiarity. They always keep a cetain distance and are not willing to manifest their feelings and emotions. They are even accused of being hypocritical because they might think one thing and say another. It is not easy to make friends with them but once you have made a friend, it is a friend for life.

The British say thay their best characteristics are culture, courtesy and consideration for the needs of others. Indeed, they are very polite. They always queue when they are waiting for a busy and hold the door open fo the person behind them. Also, the British bobies have a reputation of begin the friendliest and helpful policeman in the world. On the other hand, English football fans are regarded as hooligans and vandals able to tear stadiums into pieces. Generally speaking, however, the British are well-manneed. It is also true that they care for the needy, as there are a lot of charity organizations all over Britain.

Celebrations:

These are the public holidays observed in the countries of the United Kingdom. Workers in the United Kingdom are not automatically entitled to time off on a public holiday. Time off can be provided for in an employment agreement or by expending annual leave. British people tend to call their public holidays bank holidays.

When an anniversary day that is usually a bank holiday falls on a weekend, the date of the bank holiday is postponed and declared for a following weekday. This new date is termed a 'bank holiday in lieu' of the actual anniversary day. In this way, public holidays are not 'lost' on years when they coincide with weekends (which will already be a day off for many people).

Increasingly, there are calls for public holidays on the patron saints' days in England, Scotland and Wales (Northern Ireland already has St Patrick's Day as a holiday). An online petition sent to the Prime Minister received 11,000 signatures for a public holiday in Wales on St. David's Day; the Scottish Parliament has introduced a bill for a public holiday on St. Andrew's Day; campaigners in England are calling for a bank holiday on St. George's Day.

Alcohol:

The legal age to purchase alcohol is 18. People aged 16 and 17, with the licensee's permission, may consume wine, beer or cider with a table meal in specific areas of the premises, providing they're with an adult and the adult orders it (England & Wales only, Scotland no adult required to be present).

The legal age for the purchase of liqueur chocolates is 16. The legal age for drinking in one's home is 5 provided parental consent is given. Children under 5 must not be given alcohol unless under medical supervision in an emergency. You may not buy alcohol for a drunk person on licensed premises. All off-sales are advised to ask for photographic ID if the person looks under 21. Purchasing alcohol on behalf of a minor will result in an £80 on-the-spot fine.

Sports and Hobbies:

The national sport of the UK is football, having originated in England, and the UK has the oldest football clubs in the world. The home nations all have separate national teams and domestic competitions, most notably the FA Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Scottish Premier League. The first ever international football match was between Scotland and England in 1872. The match ended goalless.

Other famous British sporting events include the Wimbledon tennis championships, the Grand National, the London Marathon, the Six Nations rugby championships (of which 4 "home nations" participate), the British Grand Prix, The Open Championship, The Ashes cricket series and The Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge universities.

A great number of major sports originated in the United Kingdom, including football, squash, golf, tennis, boxing, rugby (rugby union and rugby league), cricket, field hockey, snooker, billiards, badminton and curling.
